May 1, 2019
The 2019 Thomson High School Graduation ceremony is quickly approaching. As is tradition here at Thomson High School, the ceremony is scheduled to be held in The Brickyard. This year, the date and time are Friday, May 24 at 8:00 p.m.
In recent years, it seems that weather concerns have impacted our plans more often than not. In response to this, we considered and implemented rain dates so that students would have an opportunity to graduate in The Brickyard. Starting this year, however, we have decided to do away with rain dates and have graduation on Friday, rain or shine, for the following reasons:
Relatives and friends often come from out of town to attend graduation. The possibility of it being on Friday, Saturday, or Sunday disrupts plans that might have been made months in advance.
Many parents plan graduation parties for their children to take place on the night of graduation. Even if a party is planned for Saturday or Sunday, having multiple possible graduation dates disrupts those plans and also can cause parents to lose money because of rentals, catering, DJs, or all three.
In the past, some students had planned trips that were to start on the Saturday after graduation. When graduation was rescheduled, those students were forced to decide whether to participate in graduation, or to go on the trip for which they had paid hundreds or thousands of dollars.
It is too difficult to accurately predict the weather. Just because the forecast says that all storms will have moved through the area by a certain time doesn’t mean that they will have.
With all of that being said, if the forecast is clear for graduation, it will be held in The Brickyard; if rain is in the forecast, it will be held in the Thomson High School gym. If possible, we will make the call at the end of graduation practice on that Friday.
The Thomson High School gym can seat around 1,200 people and the auditorium can seat around 630. At the last graduation practice on Friday, regardless of the forecast, each senior will be given six color coded tickets. Four of the same color will be for the gym and two of a different color will be for the overflow area. It is up to each family to decide how the tickets will be divided. Because of limited seating, any person who is four years old and up must have a ticket to be admitted into either the gym or the auditorium.
It is our hope that having this information ahead of time will allow each of you to better make the necessary preparations for your candidate’s graduation. Additionally, we hope that May 24, will be a bright and sunny day that lends a clear and temperate night for the Thomson High School Commencement Ceremony. As always, we greatly appreciate your support and look forward to celebrating your graduate’s success on May 24, 2019, rain or shine!
