BASIC READING AND WRITING

Mr. Benjamin Bohannon 


COURSE DESCRIPTION AND OBJECTIVES

This course is designed to provide students with various reading strategies and writing techniques to enhance reading comprehension and writing skills. The course includes a variety of independent and collaborative reading activities and writing projects which aim to develop and refine students’ abilities to understand texts at a deeper level and to develop a clear, effective, and personal voice in their writing—preparing them for university, military, or the workforce.

 

CONTENT

This course will utilize a variety of texts—novels and excerpts of novels, short stories, memories, news articles, informational pieces, poetry, plays, etc. Students will, at the discretion of the teacher, periodically have the ability to choose the texts they read. 

 
REQUIRED MATERIALS
  1. TWO 100-Sheet Composition Notebooks
  2. Folder with Prongs (for handouts)
  3. Post-It Notes (for text annotation)
  4. Pencils
  5. Curiosity and a Willingness to Learn!
 
EVALUATION AND ASSESSMENT OF STUDENT WORK
 
  • Report card grade will be computer for S1 and S2 as follows:
 

Daily (Writing, Discussion, Participation)

30%

Quizzes / Small Projects

20%

Tests / Essays / Major Projects

30%

Final Exam

20%


  • LATE POLICY: FIVE Points will be deducted for each day an assignment is late. The Point Deductions will stop at 60%—as long as the assignment is turned in and completed. 
 
CLASSROOM RULES AND PROCEDURES
    1. See the Student Handbook for the county discipline policies. 
    2. SMARTPHONES: There is a zero-tolerance policy for phones in the classroom. Smartphones are an incredible resource for learning but serve more as a distraction in the classroom setting. All use of technology in the classroom is up to the discretion of the teacher. Parents: If you need to reach your student, please contact the front office.
    3. CHEATING: It is always assumed that any work you submit for review or evaluation represents your independent thought and effort, except where it has been clearly and accurately credited to another source. Accordingly, you must never possess, use, or exchange improperly acquired information in the preparation of any assignment and never use or paraphrase another person’s words, ideas, opinions, theories, or facts without giving obvious and proper credit to the source. All graded assignments will be checked for plagiarism and the use of AI. Zeros will be given as applicable, along with a chance to submit a replacement assignment with a penalty. 
    4. RESPECT: This classroom is built around respect: respect for your peers, respect for your teacher, and respect for yourself. Disrespect disrupts the learning environment of the classroom and will be handled according to school policies.
