hey everyone welcome to you 11th grade American literature my name is some of you may not this is my second year teaching at Thompson High School 3rd year teaching overall if you have any questions about me feel free to ask I feel like we're probably going to get to know each other pretty well over the course of the semester first things first so if you look at this little graphic here and you click on it there it will take you to the Google Doc of our syllabus for this course so if you read along with that as going through that would be great so this video is especially just going to be an overview of what I expect from you in this class in what we will be doing demerit for this course American literature will build upon essential skills in the areas of Reading Writing and grammar learned is the 9th and 10th grade students experience Opera skills they bring to 11th grade as they further their studies in literature students are expected to demonstrate Mastery of American literature time periods themes and motifs they prepare for college-level English composition and or their future careers this course is designed to help students become competent writers fluent users of language independent thinkers articulate speakers and critical readers and listeners students vocabulary and grammar in context students will work together in large and small group settings recognizing the value of his or her contribution to the effort students the writing process clear but if you look on this little bookshelf over here we've got the text books that we will be using in this course so it's first one up here is the main textbook for this course and it is the only one that actually does have a link attached to it because you've spent get this text book online without paying for it and unfortunately our school does not have it online for us if you wanted to purchase a copy online for yourself feel free but you don't have to stop over here A Raisin in the Sun so if you click on any of these three titles here it will take you to an online pdf of the book The Life of Frederick Douglass and The Great Gatsby all right some of the choir materials for this course make sure you have some loose leaf paper pens or pencils and if you are using pens make sure they are blue or black ink only it just makes it a lot easier for me to make sure you have a notebook or a binder or folder or something to keep your lease papers in and then also make sure you have some Post-it notes all right so this is how your grades are going to this year so it's the same as last year your daily and homework grades are going to be 10% of your overall grade quizzes will be 30% test essays and projects will be 40% and then the final exam is 20% so what to expect in this course we will be doing group an independent project essays smaller writing assignments readings almost every day group discussions test inquisitors and some review games let's go plagiarism those of you who had me last year know how seriously I take plagiarism don't do it you guys it's not cool and I know it's online learning it's super easy to just go on Google and copy and paste and things that trust me I will okay I'm very good at seeing plagiarism and finding where it came from please don't make me give you a zero for plagiarism delicious go over the school spiders in policy quickly or plagiarizing including but not limited to allowing you're not working individually when instructed to do so copying and pasting from an online resource or otherwise passing someone else's work off as your own intentionally or not is prohibited in will be penalized according to the code of content so let's just be safe and the discipline policy the discipline measures for this class are progressive and will be followed according to the student handbook and the code of conduct classroom expectations I expect everyone is classroom to be polite and respectful to everyone in everything be punctual prepared and be mature and do your best let's talk about missed work so this is something that's easier to make up online because you can just submit your assignment to the Google Classroom sign however if you we are face to face and if you miss class you will be able to find the work that you missed in the miss work file this is located in the classroom on top of the filing cabinet in the back of the room by my desk the missing work will be in there with your name on it in red pen and if we are face to face I will point this out to you on the first day of school let's talk about late assignments which it was originally assigned so that means if I signed something in the first quarter so the first nine weeks of school I will not accept that assignment in the second quarter so once we hit that second nine weeks I will no longer be accepting the assignment automatically via 0 in floor remain that way so just make sure you get yourself a planner or get yourself organized however is best for you so that you are staying on top of assignments contact information so my email is listed here are remind code is what's this year as well make sure you are only using the first semester 1 so agap for the first semester and you can text that to 8 010 + that will sign you up for our class remind the Google Classroom code will be sent out the first day of school and if we are online I will get it to you that way the school's phone number is listed here as well now here's the last and only really thing I need you to do at the moment so I need you to click on this phone and it will take you to a Google and I will need you and your parents or Guardian to fill out this form okay so what you're going to do is to give me information and to verify that you have gotten over the syllabus and read the syllabus and so have your parents or Guardians your name and signature your name and then I need your address and then there's an option for to give me a number to add to the remind class as well so make sure you do this it is a grade you guys so doing the Google form itself is a great signing up for the remind is a grade signing up for Google Classroom is a grade and these are really easy points to help start you off on the right foot at the beginning of the semester is and make sure you do those as soon as you can
