Bonjour et Bienvenue dans la classe de français de M. Smith.  
Hello and welcome to Mr. Smith’s French Class. 
I am Mr. Smith, and I will be  your French teacher at Thompson High School.  
This video is a short introduction to my background, French classes at Thomson High School, how we will communicate, and basic expectations.

First, a little bit of information about myself.  I am a teacher with about 29 years of experience in the classroom.  I grew up in South Carolina and attended Furman University and the University of Georgia.  I have a passion for travel and experiencing new cultures, and my teaching career has taken me to countries around the world, including Japan, China, Saudi Arabia, and the Dominican Republic.  French is also not the only subject I have taught.  For the past few years, I have also taught Computer Science and Robotics.  They say you never forget your first love, and my first love was French, and I hope to share that passion with you.

Now, let’s go ahead and cover some basics.

This semester, I will be teaching French I, French II, and French III.  You can get an overview of each of these classes by reviewing the class syllabi linked on this website.  The syllabi include useful information such as topics to be covered, skills that will be developed, grading scales, and materials you will need to bring to class.

Reliable communication is important, especially during online learning.  There are a number of different ways you can communicate with me.  The first is through my McDuffie County Schools email.  You can also reach me through Google Classroom messaging feature. Google Classroom is the learning management system that we will be using for the  distribution of instructional materials and the collection of student assignments.   To use Google Classroom, though, you need to sign up with a classroom code first.  I will send you that classroom code through the third means of communication, the Remind app.  The Remind app is an easy and quick way students and teachers can communicate.  To sign up for Remind, simple text the correct Remind class code you see to 81010.  Once I verify that you are indeed a student in my class, I will send you the Google Classroom join code.

I do have some general expectations for students that I also adhere to myself.  I call them the “Three B’s”.   The first one, “Be Safe” simply means that you will conduct yourself in a way that is safe to you, your fellow students, and your teacher.  Although mainly an expectation in science or shop class where you are dealing with hazardous materials or tools, it equally applies to French class.  Being safe in this context includes not provoking or picking fights with others and refraining from horseplay.

The second of the “Three B’s” is “Be Responsible”.  This means that you keep up with your assignments and ask for help or clarification when needed.  If you don’t understand something, ask for help-I promise I won’t bite.   Being responsible means coming to class  on time and with all of the materials you need to learn.  For my part, being respectful means being prepared to teach everyday, responding to emails,  and providing feedback to you in a timely manner.

“Be Respectful” is the third of the “Three B’s”.  Being respectful means using appropriate language in class with your peers and with your teachers.  It means taking turns when speaking and listening to what others are saying.   It means respecting the learning process and not making fun of someone else’s speech or work.  We are all learners, and our efforts to learn deserve respect.  Showing respect means being considerate of different opinions and beliefs held by your classmates and your teachers.

Academic Honesty

Learning to speak, read, and write in another language and understand the culture where that language is spoken requires considerable practice on your part.  This makes academic honesty critical to your success as a learner of French.  I am sure you know what academic honesty is, but here is a reminder:  Academic honesty means you are submitting your work, not that of your peers or someone online.  This work includes not only written assignments, but also audio response assignments.  When you create informational presentations or texts, please remember to cite your sources, as that falls under academic honesty as well.  Finally, avoid the inappropriate use of Google Translate or similar translation apps. By “inappropriate”, I mean simply copying in blocks of text in English / French to be translated by Google’s AI.  Besides producing output that frequently has grammatical or word choice errors, using Google Translate in this way is a violation of Thomson High School’s Code of Conduct.
